Microsoft Buys Sysinternals (Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell)

Microsoft announced yesterday that they are buying Sysinternals a company ran by Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell. The first thing that came to my mind is "Wow, this will mean that we will have more free and cool tools to play with". I have used few of the Sysinternals tools so far and am very happy with them and they for sure made my life easy from time to time. Marm developed Rootkit Revealer which he then went on to reveal Sony's incomprehensible use of a root kit against its own customers. Mark joins as a "Technical Fellow" at Microsoft. Looks like Mark's site is loaded today as it is very slowly responding, but it's still on so far. Mark writes about this news on his blog. Congratulations to Mark and his new employer Microsoft.

Microsoft and Yahoo IM's start talking with each other

Hurray! Finally it's out. Now you can communicate with people on Yahoo IM from within MSN Live Messenger itself and vice versa. This service is still in beta and as I understand you got to sign up for the limited Beta. For Yahoo messenger, you can sign up for beta by going to http://messenger.yahoo.com/partners_msn.php page and for MSN you can sign up for beta by going to http://ideas.live.com site. To get access to this service, sign up for the beta service, sign out from both IM's and then sign in again. To test it add your Yahoo ID into your MSN Live Messenger or add your friends MSN Live Messenger ID into Yahoo IM and you are ready to go. The graphic below shows what I mean.

Obviously not all features of the IM are available when you are chatting with a person with an IM on another service (logical), but the good news is that it works!
Media_httpwwwsoftware_evccb
The advantage: - 1. Intra IM communications 2. One can have only one favourite IM installed and add all the contacts in there 3. Only have to run one IM service at a time (this might not be true if you want to use all the features of the IM not available in the other IM Service) 4. I am sure you will come up with more advantages of this! So what we need for now is a way to import all the contacts from one IM to other. Don't prefer typing all the contact information again.

Download Virtual PC 2004 for free

Microsoft has made it's version of Virtual Workstation technology free to download. It's called Virtual PC 2004 with SP1. The virtualization world is getting better and better. Consumers are winners as first we got VMWare to make Virtual Server for free, then Microsoft made a similar move. VMWare then created VMWare Player and made it free. So consumers are getting more and more things for free with better and better technology. One can use software like VMWare Workstation or Virtual PC to install guest OS on top of an existing host operating system and can have it running at the same time. So for example, one can have Windows XP Professional running as the host OS and then on top of it can install Linux OS/Windows Vista on Virtual PC and then can run two OS simultaneously. It works great when people need to test applications or patches before deploying on the Network. Even for individuals works great for testing out hacks without damaging the host Operating System. It is also handy for learners of the new OS/application as they can network two computers together. Both VMWare and Virtual PC offers many more advanced features then the ones described here. On a personal note I use VMWare Workstation for many good reasons and have been quite happy with it. But if you don't want to spend money and still enjoy virtualization technology, then Virtual PC 2004 is right there for you.

Backup copy protected DVD's

Why backup DVD's you ask? Do we back them up for increasing piracy? Do we back them up to seriously have backup copies of the media or do we back them up for shrink the size of the media? I have few of my reasons. Normally I backup to save backup copies of expensive DVD's that I own, so incase the original gets scratched I still have a copy of the media. I also back up DVD's when I want to shrink the media files to a small manageable size on my computer. The two software I have used in the past are DVDShrink and DVD Decrypter. DVDShrink is no more into development so it makes it hard to rip off some of the copy protected DVD's. But it still works. The other recommended software are DVDFAB and Rip4Me. Via: - Digg
