files and settings transfer wizard is a true bliss for everyone. we will see its working and how to do the same manually ;)
files and settings transfer wizard is a great tool as it copies all your settings and installed programs to your new operating system be it migrating to vista from xp or jumping from xp to xp & even lower versions! you can even select features or programs that you would like to copy to your new operating system. now how this this works: windows puts up all user settings in a user folder that can be found in “ :\Documents and Settings ” folder in the same drive windows is installed and you will find in this all users individual folders and common folder for common settings and common installations. the application changes and settings that you save are kept in “ Application Data ” folder now there exists two “ Application Data ” folders one in “ :\Documents and Settings\user name\ ” folder the other in “ :\Documents and Settings\user name\local settings\ ” folder what the use of two ? beats me! anyways the program, uses these two folders + the registry data and the program source to copy all your files and settings to your new os! so if in case u actually forgot to save / backup your settings u know where they are now! & if you are wondering where to download this tool from on Microsoft site u don't need to its there already on your system
Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools >> Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.
the simple way to transfer firefox is u can copy migrate the user settings from firefox i just used these to demonstrate that u can do the same to any software installation.
* adding search engine strings:OK, time for some more features for Gmail and Gtalk. Google has integrated Google Mail and Google Talk. So if configured so, all the chat sessions carried on Gtalk can be saved onto Gmail service. Wow, is this cool! Sure is. It can be handy at times when I want to times where we chat a lot and don’t have to worry about writing or copying some important conversation for future references.
Google is really going to index all the information out there, I see it coming! Some people might say that this is Google’s one more stunt to making Gtalk more famous. I partly do think so too. I don’t know many who use Google Talk. OK, it’s plain vanilla, clean interface, no ads and all, but it’s really really plain to use it apparently and it does not have a widespread acception so far as well. Such features might boost the interest of people to give it a try. On the other hand I will really have to be careful what I say out on chat now, people might hold it against me. Is that what you are worried about, then wait! They are also adding another feature called “ ‘off the record “. By enabling “Off the record” option for chat sessions, the chat messages will not be stored on Gmail, even though the chat history service might be enabled. By default the chat history option is disabled, you got to enable it to make use of it.
This is all well and good, but the feature that I am most impressed is theinclusion of Google Chat/Talk inside the browser inside Gmail service itself. Alright, this might mean one less application to install for me and also I will be able to chat from anywhere now, don’t have to be dependent on software being installed ( Ofcourse, I can use services like Meebo anyway). Google says that this feature will be rolled out in the coming weeks. Google does know how to promote their services well compared to other competitors. Microsoft, can you learn to be more innovative please?
